چکیده

Optical interferometric displacement detection techniques have recently found use in the study of nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). Here, we study the effectiveness of these techniques as the relevant NEMS dimensions are reduced beyond the optical wavelength used. We first demonstrate that optical cavities formed in the sacrificial gaps of subwavelength NEMS enable enhanced displacement detection sensitivity. In a second set of measurements, we show that the displacement sensitivity of conventional path-stabilized Michelson interferometry degrades rapidly beyond the diffraction limit. Both experiments are consistent with numerical models. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. [DOI: 10.1063/1.1843289]

Micromachined Microphones with Diffraction-based Optical Interferometric Readout and Electrostatic Actuation

Micromachined microphones that use a diffraction-based optical method for integrated interferometric detection of diaphragm displacement are described. With optoelectronics integration, this approach yields highly sensitive microphones in mm-cube volumes. Furthermore, the electrical port of the device, which is freed by optical detection, is used for electrostatic actuation of the microphone di...

Balanced electronic detection of displacement in nanoelectromechanical systems

We describe a broadband radio frequency balanced bridge technique for electronic detection of displacement in nanoelectromechanical systems ~NEMS!. With its two-port actuation-detection configuration, this approach generates a background-nulled electromotive force in a dc magnetic field that is proportional to the displacement of the NEMS resonator. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the techn...

Motion transduction in nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) arrays using near-field optomechanical coupling.

Development of efficient and sensitive motion transducers for arrays of nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) is important for fundamental research as well as for technological applications. Here, we report a single-wire nanomechanical transducer interface, which relies upon near-field optomechanical interactions. This multiplexed transducer interface comes in the form of a single-mode fiber tap...

Research Progress on F-P Interference—Based Fiber-Optic Sensors

We review our works on Fabry-Perot (F-P) interferometric fiber-optic sensors with various applications. We give a general model of F-P interferometric optical fiber sensors including diffraction loss caused by the beam divergence and the Gouy phase shift. Based on different structures of an F-P cavity formed on the end of a single-mode fiber, the F-P interferometric optical sensor has been exte...

Optoacoustic tomography using time-resolved interferometric detection of surface displacement.

We introduce a minimally invasive technique for optoacoustic imaging of turbid media using optical interferometric detection of surface displacement produced by thermoelastic stress transients. The technique exploits endogenous or exogenous optical contrast of heterogeneous tissues and the low attenuation of stress wave propagation to localize and image subsurface absorbers in optically turbid ...
